Apparently my office moved?

So we've had this DSL business account for ages, and it gets decent speed...1.5... not great but it works.  But we needed to change the name on the account since the firm name changed like 15 years ago and it was about time to do a change over.

So we called several months ago and got a new account.  And they had to pull a new line in since they couldn't just do a name change.  Now here's the kicker, the new account is vastly slower than the old one.  Office hasn't moved.  Wiring is the same, and yet the new account only throws off 384.

Now when I go online to see if we're eligible for an upgrade speed, it says that we are.  But I can't sign up for it online.. no worries, I'll call.

So I called and the best they can offer me is the same speed as my new plan.  Okay so there is a wire that comes into my business that gives a decent speed.  And then there's a second line that does not.  Yet the office has not moved one bit.

Given that now I have the email set up so that it's not that hard to move the static IP, I'm seriously looking at Comcast Business.

But it floors me that I have an existing line... and the new line can't do what the old line did.

I can honestly tell you that you will be much happier with Comcast Business, as I am.

Even though I had very good DSL I have now changed to Comcast Business as they were offering an excellent monthly rate of $59 + 1 static IP for $4.95 and 5 for $8.95. So far no problems and the speed has been amazing. I've also switched a couple of clients with the same results.

Note the "Up to 3 Mbs" - They can legally give you 200 baud rate with that BS.

DSL is like that. The phone company has no way of assigning you a line that will work at any guaranteed speed. We had a situation where the guy who owned the house before we did had a DSL line, which they disconnected shortly after we moved in. Then we ordered DSL, they connected up the line and tested it. "Nope, can't get DSL on that line - it's too far from the exchange."

"Did the exchange move?"

"Nope, but they gave you a line to a different exchange. You need to get a line to a closer exchange."

"How do I do that?"

"Call up and schedule a new line connection, and see if they give you one that works for DSL next time."

Apparently, the phone companies still haven't figured out that if you sell DSL service to a consumer, it might be worth making sure that you can provide that service, and perhaps reserving ahead of time a line that will work.

Waaaaaay back in 1996 I tried to get DSL for my house. Too far from the DSLAM. Had some phone issues two years later and while the tech was out I asked him to find a shorter pair and he did. Was able to get DSL just fine.

A month ago we had a client with DSL start going down. Turned out they were at 18,500 feet! Worked OK for 4 years then crap. Phone company refuses to help of course. Switched pairs and magically it started working again at the trailer outside the building. The signal was stronger at the outside trailer, another 300 feet from the MPOE. Weird stuff for sure.

Here's a number I like to call in this sort of scenario.  It's not local for NoCal but the call will get routed when you put in the DSL number. (323) 262-0975.  This magic number is for the AT&T Advanced Solutions Inc. Maintenance Center.  These are the nuts and bolts folks that have a direct path to the NOC and can fix the problem for real.  I keep this number in my cell as it is the first call I make when troubleshooting AT&T DSL...
